Mammoth adds 777 freighter conversions in China with STAECO

Mammoth Freighters Establishes Boeing 777 Conversion Capability in China Through STAECO Partnership

  • Qingdao Becomes a New Strategic Hub in the Global Widebody Freighter Conversion Market

AeroMorning – John Smith – July 17, 2026

1. The Qingdao Agreement and Mammoth’s Global Footprint

On July 15, 2026, Mammoth Freighters announced the selection of Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co., Ltd. (STAECO) to establish a Boeing 777 Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) conversion site in Qingdao, China.

The agreement marks Mammoth Freighters’ first Boeing 777 conversion location in the Asia-Pacific region, expanding a global industrial footprint that already includes:

  • Fort Worth, Texas, United States;
  • Manchester, United Kingdom.

The first conversion line in Qingdao is scheduled to become operational in September 2026, with a second line planned for early 2027.

The first aircraft scheduled to enter the facility is a Boeing 777-200LR owned by Jetran, with conversion expected to begin in autumn 2026.

The objective is to create additional widebody freighter conversion capacity close to the Chinese and wider Asia-Pacific aviation markets, supporting airlines, lessors and cargo operators.

2. Mammoth’s FAA Certification Milestone

The Qingdao expansion follows a major transition from an engineering development program to a commercial conversion solution.

In April 2026, Mammoth Freighters received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for its Boeing 777-200LRMF (Long Range Mammoth Freighter) conversion program.

The FAA STC confirmed that Mammoth’s aircraft modification design complied with applicable FAA airworthiness requirements, allowing the aircraft to enter commercial service.

The first two converted Boeing 777-200LRMF aircraft are expected to enter operations in autumn 2026:

  • one aircraft with Qatar Airways Cargo;
  • one aircraft with DHL.

3. Industrial Partners and Aerospace Ecosystem

STAECO

Mammoth selected STAECO because of its extensive Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) experience and large-scale aircraft modification capabilities.

STAECO has already completed more than 100 Boeing 737-800 passenger-to-freighter conversions, demonstrating significant industrial experience in aircraft conversion programs.

HAECO Group

The Qingdao project will also benefit from Boeing 777 expertise available within the wider HAECO Group ecosystem, including HAECO Xiamen.

This broader industrial environment is expected to support the development of Boeing 777 conversion capability for Chinese and Asian airlines, leasing companies and cargo operators.

4. Competitive Landscape: Two FAA-Certified Boeing 777 P2F Programs

Mammoth’s expansion into China is not the first overseas Boeing 777 conversion initiative.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), through its Bedek Aviation Group, established an early strategic position in the Middle East through an August 2021 partnership with Etihad Engineering in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The partnership announced plans for two Boeing 777-300ER conversion lines capable of processing several aircraft annually.

Both IAI/Bedek and Mammoth Freighters developed their own Boeing 777 passenger-to-freighter solutions based on proprietary engineering designs and FAA-approved Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs).

However, the two programs target different aircraft variants and address different cargo market requirements.

5. Boeing 777 P2F Program Comparison

The strategic difference between the two aircraft is fundamental:

The Boeing 777-200LRMF prioritizes range and network flexibility, while the Boeing 777-300ERSF prioritizes maximum cargo volume and cargo economics.

These aircraft therefore address complementary rather than identical segments of the widebody freighter market.

6. Strategic Importance of China and the Global Shift

China represents one of the largest future markets for Boeing 777 passenger-to-freighter conversions.

Over the next 10 to 15 years, many Boeing 777-200 and 777-300ER aircraft currently operated by passenger airlines are expected to become candidates for conversion as carriers introduce newer-generation aircraft.

Chinese carriers collectively operate one of the world’s largest Boeing 777 passenger fleets, creating a significant future conversion pool.

The Boeing 777 remains attractive for freighter conversion because of:

  • long-range capability;
  • large fuselage volume;
  • operational reliability;
  • worldwide aircraft availability;
  • established global maintenance infrastructure.

By establishing conversion capability in Qingdao, Mammoth is positioning itself close to a major future source of Boeing 777 conversion candidates.

7. Abu Dhabi and Qingdao: Two Emerging Boeing 777 Conversion Centers

The widebody conversion market is expanding beyond traditional Western locations toward regions where aircraft fleets, cargo demand and aerospace industrial capabilities are concentrated.

Abu Dhabi — IAI / Etihad Engineering

Strategic advantages:

  • early entry into the Boeing 777 conversion market;
  • strong Middle Eastern aerospace ecosystem;
  • focus on the Boeing 777-300ERSF segment;
  • access to widebody operators and leasing companies.

Qingdao — Mammoth Freighters / STAECO

Strategic advantages:

  • proximity to the Chinese aviation market;
  • access to Asian airlines and leasing companies;
  • STAECO’s proven aircraft modification experience;
  • support for Mammoth’s newly certified 777-200LRMF program.

Conclusion

The Mammoth–STAECO partnership illustrates the globalization of the widebody freighter conversion sector.

The industry is increasingly moving toward regions where:

  • large passenger aircraft fleets are concentrated;
  • air cargo demand is expanding;
  • experienced aerospace industrial ecosystems already exist.

IAI/Bedek established an early position in the Middle East through Abu Dhabi, focusing on the high-volume Boeing 777-300ERSF segment.

Mammoth Freighters is now establishing a major position in China following FAA certification of its Boeing 777-200LRMF program, targeting long-range and flexible cargo operations.

As more Boeing 777 passenger aircraft become available for conversion over the coming decades, Abu Dhabi and Qingdao are positioned to become important elements of the future global freighter aircraft supply chain.
