Lufthansa Group Appoints ITA Airways Executive Lorenza Maggio as New Brussels Airlines CEO
Lufthansa Group has announced the appointment of Lorenza Maggio as the new Chief Executive Officer of Brussels Airlines, subject to approval by the Board of Directors of SN Airholding. She will succeed Dorothea von Boxberg, who will step down at her own request on 31 August 2026.
Maggio currently serves as Chief Strategy & Integration Officer and a member of the Board of Directors at ITA Airways, where she has played a key role in the airline’s integration into the Lufthansa Group following the German airline group’s investment.
In addition to leading Brussels Airlines, Maggio will also assume the role of Executive Board Representative to the European Commission, a position previously held by von Boxberg.
Commenting on the appointment, Lufthansa Group highlighted Maggio’s extensive experience in airline strategy, commercial management and international leadership. Before joining ITA Airways, she held several senior positions within Lufthansa Group, including Brussels Airlines responsibility for sales across Europe, the Middle East and Africa for the group’s network airlines.
From ITA Airways to Brussels Airlines
Maggio joins Brussels Airlines from ITA Airways (Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A.), Italy’s national carrier. The airline was established in 2021 to succeed Alitalia, which ceased operations after years of severe financial difficulties.
Based at Rome Fiumicino Airport, ITA Airways operates an extensive network of domestic services within Italy, as well as international flights across Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia.
Since 2025, Lufthansa Group has held a 41% stake in ITA Airways, while the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance has retained the remaining 59% ownership. The investment marked a major step in integrating the Italian carrier into Lufthansa Group’s multi-airline strategy.
As Chief Strategy & Integration Officer, Maggio has been closely involved in that integration process, giving her firsthand experience of aligning ITA Airways with Lufthansa Group’s operations and long-term strategy. That experience is widely seen as an important factor behind her appointment to lead Brussels Airlines as the Belgian carrier continues its development within the Lufthansa Group.
Dorothea von Boxberg will remain in her position in Brussels Airlines until the end of August to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Lufthansa Group thanked her for her contribution to Brussels Airlines and wished her success in her future endeavors.
