Safran and Baykar deepen their drone cooperation

Safran and Baykar Deepen Strategic Cooperation in the Drone and Smart Weapons Sector

AeroMorning — John Smith — May 13,2026

On May 12, 2026, French defence and aerospace group Safran officially announced a strategic partnership with Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation drones and smart weapon systems.

According to Safran, the agreement focuses on the co-development of integrated solutions combining optronic sensors, navigation systems, and guided weapon capabilities for both UAV and air-to-ground missions. One of the first concrete outcomes will be the integration of Safran’s Euroflir electro-optical system onto Baykar’s Bayraktar TB2 drones.

What Safran Gains from the Partnership

For Safran, the agreement provides direct access to one of the world’s most operationally proven and commercially successful UAV ecosystems.

Baykar has become a dominant force in tactical and combat drones through platforms such as Bayraktar TB2 and AKINCI, which have been deployed in multiple theatres and exported widely across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. By embedding Safran technologies into Baykar platforms, the French group gains:

  • broader international exposure for its optronics and navigation systems,
  • accelerated access to fast-growing export drone markets,
  • a stronger position in the rapidly expanding European and NATO drone ecosystem,
  • opportunities to integrate its guided weapon technologies into field-proven UAV platforms.

The partnership also reinforces Safran’s strategy of positioning itself as a systems integrator in autonomous warfare technologies rather than solely a component supplier.

What Baykar Gains from the Partnership

For Baykar, the alliance with Safran significantly strengthens the sophistication and credibility of its systems in Western and European defence markets.

Safran brings advanced expertise in:

  • electro-optical targeting systems,
  • inertial navigation,
  • timing and positioning technologies,
  • smart weapon integration,
  • NATO-compatible defence electronics.

The integration of Euroflir payloads is particularly important because high-performance optronics remain among the most strategically sensitive components in modern UAV warfare. The partnership therefore improves Baykar’s technological depth while increasing interoperability with European defence customers.

The cooperation also helps Baykar consolidate its industrial footprint in Europe at a time when many European governments are seeking rapid drone capability expansion.

Baykar’s Expanding Network of International Partnerships

The Safran agreement is part of a much broader international industrial strategy pursued by Baykar over the past two years.

Leonardo (Italy)

In March 2025, Baykar signed a major partnership agreement with Italian defence giant Leonardo to establish cooperation in unmanned technologies. The agreement covers:

  • unmanned aerial systems,
  • payload integration,
  • mission systems,
  • certification,
  • joint production in Italy,
  • future space technology cooperation.

The partnership is strategically important because it gives Baykar stronger industrial access to the European Union defence market while providing Leonardo with advanced combat-proven UAV platforms.

EDGE Group (United Arab Emirates)

Baykar recently expanded its cooperation with the UAE’s EDGE Group during SAHA 2026.

The latest agreements, announced in May 2026, focus on integrating EDGE’s AL TARIQ precision-guided munitions onto Baykar’s AKINCI combat drone platform. The cooperation follows earlier work integrating the DESERT STING 16 guided weapon onto the Bayraktar TB2.

This partnership enhances Baykar’s strike capabilities while allowing EDGE to expand the export reach of its smart munitions through Baykar’s widely deployed UAV fleet.

Piaggio Aerospace (Italy)

Baykar also expanded into Europe industrially through the acquisition of Italian aerospace company Piaggio Aerospace in 2024, strengthening its manufacturing presence in Italy and supporting its ambition to become a long-term European aerospace player.

Ukraine Cooperation

Baykar has simultaneously deepened cooperation with Ukraine through drone production initiatives and industrial partnerships. Construction of a Bayraktar drone manufacturing facility in Ukraine was previously confirmed as part of the company’s long-term strategic engagement with Kyiv.

A New Phase in the European Drone Industry

The Safran–Baykar partnership illustrates a wider transformation underway in the European defence sector, where established Western defence companies increasingly collaborate with agile drone specialists capable of delivering operational systems at scale.

For Safran, the alliance accelerates its positioning in autonomous combat systems and UAV payload integration. For Baykar, it strengthens technological credibility and European industrial integration.

Together with Baykar’s partnerships with Leonardo, EDGE, Piaggio Aerospace, and Ukrainian industrial actors, the agreement confirms that the Turkish company is evolving from a drone exporter into a central node in an emerging transnational defence technology network.
