Lufthansa Technik has officially broken ground on its new 55,000-square-meter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, marking a major milestone in the company’s European expansion strategy while reinforcing the Lufthansa Group’s growing industrial presence in the country.

Announced during a groundbreaking ceremony on 29 June 2026, the project represents one of Lufthansa Technik’s largest recent industrial investments and is expected to create approximately 700 highly skilled jobs. The new site will specialize in the repair of aircraft components and engine parts and is scheduled to become operational in 2028. According to Lufthansa Technik, the facility forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to expand global MRO capacity in response to sustained market demand.

The German MRO leader selected Portugal after highlighting the country’s skilled aerospace workforce, political stability and strategic location within the European Union. The investment also strengthens Lufthansa Technik’s European maintenance network alongside its existing facilities in Germany and other international locations.

Strategic Signal Amid TAP Air Portugal Privatization

Although the official Lufthansa Technik announcement focuses on the industrial project, the timing of the groundbreaking is particularly significant.

The ceremony comes as Lufthansa Group is competing with Air France-KLM to acquire a minority stake in TAP Air Portugal, with the Portuguese government’s privatization process entering a decisive phase ahead of the expected bid deadline.

During the event, Lufthansa executives reiterated the Group’s strong commitment to Portugal. The official Lufthansa Technik communication notes that the investment demonstrates the Lufthansa Group’s long-term engagement with the country and supports its strategic interest in Portugal’s aviation sector.

Industry observers widely interpret the new MRO facility as reinforcing Lufthansa’s industrial footprint in Portugal while strengthening its credentials as a long-term strategic partner for TAP Air Portugal.

Expanding European MRO Capacity

The Santa Maria da Feira facility will occupy a site of approximately 230,000 square meters, with the 55,000-square-meter industrial complex equipped with advanced technologies dedicated to aircraft component and engine-part maintenance.

The project complements Lufthansa Technik’s ongoing global expansion program, which also includes new investments in the United States, Canada and the Philippines, reflecting continued growth in worldwide demand for aircraft maintenance services.
