X721 Announces the Successful Completion of Its Inaugural Mission M001, Marking a Major Milestone on the Road to the Stratosphere
Mérignac, July 27, 2026
X721 is pleased to announce the successful completion of its inaugural mission, M001. On this occasion, the Heliblade demonstrator successfully completed its first outdoor flight test following a series of successful validation tests.
This major milestone confirms the maturity of the aircraft’s design and forms part of an ambitious development program aimed at reaching the stratosphere by 2028.
A Successful First Mission
Classified as an experimental unmanned aircraft, the Heliblade belongs to the HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) and HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo-Satellite) categories.
The first M001 flight test took place in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 07:45 CET. The flight was conducted in two stages:
- a first hover at 15 meters;
- a second hover at 35 meters above ground level.
The demonstrator flown was the Heliblade Model 11, named in tribute to the Blériot XI, the pioneering monoplane introduced in 1909. It features two ultra-lightweight wings with a total wingspan of 18 meters and a mass of less than 4 kilograms.
This successful flight test was conducted with the support and cooperation of the French Air and Space Force and the French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction générale de l’armement – DGA).
Unlike conventional stratospheric platforms, the Heliblade is based on an innovative ultra-light rotating-wing architecture. Its in-flight stability and structural rigidity are achieved through the use of centrifugal forces—an unprecedented technological approach that opens up new opportunities for both public and private sector applications worldwide.
Statement by Pierre-Eric Lys
Pierre-Eric Lys, CEO & Chief Engineer of X721, said: “Today, centrifugal forces have won a small battle against gravity… and I must say we are extremely pleased with the outcome.
This first flight represents a very special moment for the entire team. Just a few moments ago, the Heliblade was still only a prototype—the result of several years of research, simulations and testing. Today, it has become an aircraft by demonstrating its ability to achieve controlled flight.
Naturally, we remain cautious. A successful maiden flight is only one milestone. Many more flight tests and continuous improvements will be required before the system reaches full operational capability.
Nevertheless, today we have crossed a major technological threshold.”
The Advantages of the Heliblade
The Heliblade’s design is built around three fundamental principles:
- Simplicity
- Agility
- Lightweight construction
The successful demonstration of the Heliblade paves the way for a new generation of stationary platforms operating within the air-space continuum.
In its stratospheric configuration, the Heliblade will combine:
- ultra-lightweight sparless wings;
- centrifugal force to provide structural rigidity;
- solar-electric propulsion powered by next-generation battery technologies.
This innovative architecture will deliver exceptional structural stability, high maneuverability and extended endurance.
By 2030, X721 aims to establish the Heliblade as the benchmark ultra-light aircraft for Very High Altitude (VHA) operations.
By the end of 2030, the aircraft is expected to be capable of conducting long-endurance stratospheric missions while carrying payloads of up to 10 kilograms, including cameras, sensors and telecommunications systems.
An Easily Deployable Aircraft
The Heliblade has been designed as an ultra-light aircraft capable of being deployed anywhere in the world.
With a total mass of less than 70 kilograms, it is easy to transport and can be rapidly deployed in almost any operational environment.
Planned Technical Specifications
- Deployment time: less than 72 hours
- Wingspan: 50 meters
- Weight: less than 70 kilograms
- Estimated ascent to the stratosphere: approximately 9 hours (depending on weather conditions)
- Endurance: from several weeks to several months
- Operating temperature range in the stratosphere: −40°C to −80°C
Multiple Operational Applications
Operating much closer to the Earth’s surface than conventional satellites will enable the Heliblade to:
- capture imagery and detect objects at a resolution up to four times greater than that achievable using comparable satellite technologies, without the limitations imposed by revisit times;
- monitor or intercept radio frequencies, analyze electromagnetic signals (including communications and radar emissions), monitor the radio-frequency environment and collect strategic intelligence in real time;
- provide communications services by acting as a relay platform between fixed and mobile assets located on the ground, in the air and in space.
A Sustainable Approach
The Heliblade has been conceived as part of a responsible and sustainable innovation strategy.
Rather than relying on massive infrastructure or hyper-growth models, X721 has embraced a pragmatic approach based on sustainable development and resource efficiency.
Building on this technological breakthrough, X721 aims to become a leading player in the development of a decarbonized digital infrastructure free from orbital debris.
X721 France
To support its continued growth, X721 established its French subsidiary, X721 France, in Mérignac, within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
X721 France plans to collaborate with companies specializing in:
- solar-electric power systems;
- embedded electronic systems;
- artificial intelligence;
- composite and advanced materials;
- high-speed data transmission and telecommunications technologies.
Looking further ahead, the Heliblade’s underlying technology could also support future space exploration missions, particularly for operations within the Martian atmosphere.
Statement by Jean-Jacques Dordain
Jean-Jacques Dordain, Chairman of the Board of X721, stated: “By combining experience with ingenuity, and technology with operational expertise, X721 has every opportunity to bridge the missing link between the upper atmosphere and very low Earth orbit, providing access to reality precisely where and when it is needed.”
About X721
Founded in Dubai by Pierre-Eric Lys, X721 is an international company specializing in the design and development of a family of ultra-light aircraft known as Heliblade.
X721 has recognized expertise in the design of ultra-light aircraft and the execution of high-altitude flight testing. The company’s name refers to the record achieved in March 2025, when a Heliblade prototype successfully simulated flight at an altitude of 72,100 feet.
The company is pursuing an ambitious development program aimed at reaching the stratosphere by 2028. This program is being developed in France with the support of the French Air and Space Force and the French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction générale de l’armement – DGA).
To further strengthen its development activities, X721 established its French subsidiary, X721 France, in April 2026, leveraging the expertise of the French aerospace ecosystem and the world-class industrial and research infrastructure of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
