London City Airport selects Amadeus for tech transformation

1 – Version UK

London City Airport Selects Amadeus for Its Technological Transformation

  • Thanks to Amadeus technology, passengers at London City Airport will be able to check in and drop off their baggage using biometrics, making their journey through the airport even simpler and faster.
  • The agreement reflects Amadeus’ vision of connecting the various players across the travel ecosystem to deliver a smoother passenger experience through biometrics and innovative technologies.

Amadeus, October 23, 2026 – Located in the heart of the Royal Docks, a historic district of London, London City Airport is the capital’s most central airport. It is internationally recognised for its punctuality, the speed of its services and the quality of its passenger experience, which has received numerous awards.

Having received authorisation to increase its capacity to nine million passengers per year, the airport has selected Amadeus to deploy cutting-edge technology designed to transform every aspect of passenger services, from check-in to boarding, in order to speed up the passenger journey, reduce queues and improve operational efficiency.

This technological transformation will enable London City Airport to accommodate more passengers within its existing terminal, thanks to a completely seamless check-in and baggage drop-off process.

Amadeus self-service kiosks and automated baggage drop units will be made available to all airlines operating at the airport. With this biometric infrastructure, passengers will be able to register their identity just once for their entire journey, then check in and drop off their baggage with ease.

London City Airport has already taken an initial step towards delivering a seamless passenger journey, in line with its ambitions, by migrating to the cloud with Amadeus Airport Cloud Use Service (ACUS), which is now available throughout the terminal. ACUS enables airlines to run their passenger service applications using shared airport infrastructure, rather than relying on fixed check-in counters dedicated to each airline. Staff can therefore assist passengers from anywhere in the airport, delivering greater flexibility, increased efficiency and an improved overall experience.

Ian Cowie, Senior Director Airport Operations, London City Airport, said: “Our passengers value simplicity and efficiency when travelling through London City Airport. Our collaboration with Amadeus, built on open and multicloud technology, enables us to transform our operations and the entire passenger journey, from check-in to boarding. This allows us to further reduce queues, increase our capacity and improve efficiency. We are delighted to offer London City Airport passengers the latest innovations in self-service and biometric technology.”

Georges Fenergi, Senior Vice President, Airports and Border Authorities, EMEA, Amadeus, said: “By leveraging self-service, shared infrastructure and biometric technology, London City Airport can collaborate more effectively with its partners, better manage passenger flows and deliver a seamless end-to-end journey, from check-in to boarding. This collaboration demonstrates our ability to improve the travel experience across the entire ecosystem. We are proud to support this unique airport with truly transformative technology that brings its vision to life.”

About London City Airport

Located in the heart of the Royal Docks, a historic district of London, London City Airport (LCY) is London’s most central airport. It is internationally recognised for its punctuality, the speed of its services and the quality of its passenger experience, which has received numerous awards.

As the largest private-sector employer in the London Borough of Newham, the airport has continued to grow for nearly 40 years, offering fast and convenient access from the heart of the capital. Its extensive and expanding network serves highly sought-after destinations for both city breaks and longer stays, including Geneva (from October 26), Chambéry and Innsbruck (from December 12), all just a few hours’ flight away.

It is the closest airport for more than half of Londoners. Two-thirds of passengers use London City Airport’s DLR (Docklands Light Railway) station and cite ease of access as one of the main reasons they enjoy travelling from the airport. Combined with this accessibility, some of the fastest check-in times in the industry provide a simple and seamless experience for individual travellers, business travellers, couples and families alike.

As part of an airspace change process, London City Airport is awaiting approval to accommodate new-generation aircraft with greater capacity. This development will enable the airport to continue growing sustainably until it reaches its authorised limit of nine million passengers per year.

In 2025, London City Airport was named “Best Airport in the UK” at the prestigious Condé Nast Traveller UK Readers’ Choice Awards.
