Japan Airlines Selects Embraer E190-E2 for Regional Fleet
Renewal
- JAL orders 16 aircraft, with options for 10 more, as it
prepares to modernise J-AIRe28099s regional fleet from fiscal 2029, in April 2029.
TOKYO, October 14, 2026 e2804 Japan Airlines (JAL) has selected
Embraere28099s E190-E2 to renew the regional fleet of its subsidiary J-AIR. In a
press release published on October 14, JAL confirmed 16 firm orders and 10
options, with deliveries scheduled to begin in fiscal 2029.
The decision supports JAL Groupe28099s Management Vision 2035,
which aims to maintain a sustainable domestic air network amid changing demand,
population decline and rising operating costs.
A More Efficient Successor to J-AIRe28099s Existing Fleet
According to J-AIRe28099s official fleet information, dated April
1, 2026, the airline operates 32 regional jets: 18 E170s with 76 seats and 14
E190s with 95 seats. The aircraft use GE CF34-8E5 and CF34-10E5 engines,
respectively, and have published ranges of approximately 2,600 km and 3,000 km.
The E190-E2 features Pratt & Whitney PW1900G geared
turbofan engines and a redesigned wing. Embraer claims up to 29% better fuel
efficiency per seat and a noise footprint up to 68% smaller than that of the
first-generation E-Jets.
These improvements could help J-AIR reduce fuel consumption,
COe282e282b3 emissions and noise while improving operating economics. Actual savings
will depend on route profiles, cabin configuration and operating conditions.
With a published range of approximately 5,463 km, the
E190-E2 offers substantially greater nominal range than J-AIRe28099s current
aircraft. Its final seating configuration for the Japanese carrier has yet to
be announced.

ANA Holdings Also Orders the E190-E2
JAL is not the only major Japanese airline group to select
the aircraft. ANA Holdings, parent company of All Nippon Airways and Peach
Aviation, initially ordered 15 E190-E2s in February 2025, with five options.
On July 29, 2026, ANA Holdings announced its decision to
order eight additional aircraft. Embraer subsequently announced the signing of
the agreement on September 4, bringing ANA Holdingse28099 firm orders to 23, with
five options remaining. The groupe28099s first delivery is scheduled for 2028.
