Eurosatory 2026: Thales Unveils Armed CAMCOPTER S-301 as Europe Eyes the Loyal Wingman Era
AeroMorning — John Smith – June 22, 2026
Paris-Nord Villepinte, France — June 17, 2026 — At Eurosatory 2026, Thales and Austrian UAV manufacturer Schiebel unveiled one of the most ambitious rotary-wing unmanned combat systems presented at the exhibition: an armed version of the CAMCOPTER S-301 equipped with Thales sensors, mission systems, and precision-guided effectors.
Presented as a multi-role platform capable of Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR), strike, and force-protection missions, the aircraft is also being positioned by Thales for future “loyal wingman” and manned-unmanned teaming concepts, including the British Army’s Project NYX initiative for Apache helicopter teaming.
The unveiling reflects a broader shift across NATO countries toward increasingly autonomous and expendable combat systems. However, unlike jet-powered collaborative combat aircraft such as Boeing’s MQ-28 Ghost Bat or Airbus’ Wingman concept, the S-301 targets a different operational niche: a heavily armed vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone capable of operating alongside helicopters, naval vessels, and ground forces.
