Philippine Airlines (PAL), the flag carrier of the Philippines, has appointed former Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) chief executive Datuk Captain Izham Ismail as an independent director, strengthening the airline’s governance and aviation expertise as it enters a new phase of fleet modernization and international growth.
Izham joins the PAL board alongside Filipino business leader Edgar Chua, former chairman of Shell Philippines and current chairman of the Makati Business Club. The appointments were approved following PAL’s annual shareholders’ meeting on June 1, 2026.
According to PAL Chairman and CEO Lucio C. Tan, the airline is seeking to reinforce its leadership team as it pursues sustainable growth and expands its international presence.
“Mr. Chua’s extensive business leadership experience and Captain Izham’s global aviation expertise will be invaluable as Philippine Airlines continues to pursue sustainable growth, strengthen governance and expand its role in connecting the Philippines to the world.”
A veteran of Southeast Asian aviation
Izham Ismail is widely regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most experienced airline executives.
He spent more than four decades within the Malaysia Airlines group and served as Managing Director and Group Chief Executive of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, until his retirement in January 2026. During his tenure, he led a major restructuring effort that significantly reduced the group’s liabilities and debt while restoring profitability after the COVID-19 crisis.
Among his most notable achievements were:
- Oversight of MAG’s 2021 financial restructuring;
- Reduction of liabilities by more than RM15 billion (approx. US$3.5 billion);
- Elimination of approximately RM10 billion in debt (approx. US$2.4 billion);
- Securing a RM3.6 billion (US$855 million) capital injection from shareholder Khazanah Nasional;
- Return to sustained profitability after the pandemic.
Interestingly, Izham also has historical ties with Philippine Airlines. According to PAL, he attended the PAL Aviation School in 1979 as part of his pilot training, creating a long-standing connection with the airline he now joins as a board member.
Why PAL is strengthening its Board
The appointments come at a critical moment for Philippine Airlines.
Following its Chapter 11 restructuring in 2021, PAL eliminated more than US$2 billion in debt and has since returned to profitability. The carrier is now investing heavily in fleet renewal, long-haul expansion, and service improvements.
PAL recently began receiving new Airbus A350-1000 aircraft and continues to expand its international network across Asia-Pacific and beyond. The airline reported first-quarter 2026 net income of approximately US$78.6 million on revenues approaching US$896 million, continuing a series of profitable quarters.
Management believes that adding experienced external directors will help the company navigate challenges including:
- Fleet expansion and modernization;
- Rising fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions;
- Intensifying competition among Asian carriers;
- Long-term international growth initiatives.
