MICHELIN ResiCare Launches Two New High-Performance Thermal Resins, Alternatives to Phenolic Resins

Paris, March 9, 2026 – Resi4 CARBON/CARBON and Resi4 ABLATION: two biosourced aramino resins designed without formaldehyde, offering a safer industrial alternative for composite applications exposed to extreme thermal environments.

Resi4 CARBON/CARBON and Resi4 ABLATION are dedicated to high-performance thermal composites used in defense or space applications.

MICHELIN ResiCare, a brand of the Michelin Group, announces the commercial launch of Resi4 CARBON/CARBON and Resi4 ABLATION. These two innovative aramino resins are formaldehyde-free and biosourced at 100% and 90%, respectively. Primarily formulated from 5-HMF (5-hydroxymethylfurfural), a non-toxic biosourced molecule, these new solutions provide a safer alternative to traditional phenolic resins.

Available and compatible with industrial-scale production starting September 2026, these thermosetting resins are intended for the most demanding composite applications, including aerospace, defense, aviation, and automotive sectors.

Thermal Performance and Regulatory Compliance

These new resins meet the growing demand from composite manufacturers for high thermal performance, strict compliance with European regulations (notably REACH and Directive 2004/37/EC), and reduction of environmental footprint.

They also follow a fully European sourcing approach, from raw materials to the finished polymer, helping to secure the supply chains of strategic industrial sectors.

Innovative Aramino Chemistry

Derived from innovative aramino chemistry, these resins replace formaldehyde with aromatic aldehydes and biosourced polyphenols while maintaining the thermal performance levels required for advanced composites.

This approach allows manufacturers to anticipate regulatory changes and ensures the robustness and reliability of materials exposed to harsh environments.

Resi4 CARBON/CARBON: Designed for High-Temperature Composites

Resi4 CARBON/CARBON is intended for CMCs (Ceramic Matrix Composites), providing high thermal performance without formaldehyde. It is an ideal solution for high-performance applications such as space propulsion, nuclear, advanced civil engineering, or motorsports, where thermal stability and material reliability are critical.

Resi4 ABLATION: Optimized for Extreme Environments

Also formaldehyde-free, Resi4 ABLATION stands out for its particularly high charring rate, meeting the strictest requirements in terms of ablation and thermal resistance.

It targets applications exposed to extreme thermal fluxes, where the stability of the char layer determines the performance and safety of systems, particularly in the space and defense sectors.

An Industrial Alternative Ready in 2026

With these two resins, MICHELIN ResiCare offers composite industry players solutions immediately available for testing and industrially operational starting September 2026. They simultaneously meet requirements for thermal performance, environmental sustainability, regulatory compliance, and operator safety, without compromising market expectations.
