Malaysia Conducts First ANKA UAV Test Flight as Part of RMAF Modernisation

Malaysia Conducts

April 3, 2026 – Malaysia has successfully conducted the first test flight of its newly acquired ANKA unmanned aerial system, marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing defence modernisation efforts.

According to an official communication by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), the maiden flight of the ANKA-THS (the Malaysian designation for the Turkish-built ANKA-S UAV) took place on 3 April 2026 at Labuan Air Base in East Malaysia.

The test flight lasted approximately three hours and was described by the RMAF as part of the final preparation phase before the system’s formal induction into operational service.

An Officially Confirmed Capability Boost

The information originates directly from RMAF institutional messaging, including official statements and social media communications later relayed by defence media.

In its statement, the RMAF emphasized that the ANKA-THS will significantly enhance Malaysia’s ISTAR capabilities (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance), particularly in Eastern Malaysia and the South China Sea.

The air force highlighted that the system is capable of:

  • Long-endurance missions exceeding 20 hours
  • Day-and-night, all-weather surveillance operations
  • Persistent monitoring of maritime and land-based targets

The deployment at Labuan Air Base is strategically significant due to its proximity to contested maritime zones, reinforcing Malaysia’s ability to monitor its Exclusive Economic Zone.

Technical Overview: The ANKA-THS

Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries, the ANKA belongs to the MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) class of UAVs.

Key characteristics include:

  • Endurance of up to 24–30 hours depending on configuration
  • Operational altitude of around 30,000 feet
  • Payload capacity for electro-optical sensors and radar systems
  • Satellite communications (SATCOM) capability for beyond-line-of-sight control

Malaysia ordered three systems under a 2023 contract, with deliveries completed in early 2026.

Notably, the Malaysian configuration is currently focused on surveillance rather than strike missions, although the platform itself is capable of being armed.

Strategic Context: South China Sea Surveillance

The RMAF explicitly frames the ANKA-THS as a tool to provide “eyes and ears” over national waters, particularly in the increasingly contested South China Sea.

This reflects broader regional trends, where persistent ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) capabilities are becoming essential for:

  • Monitoring foreign naval and coast guard activity
  • Protecting offshore energy infrastructure
  • Supporting maritime domain awareness

Compared to manned aircraft, MALE UAVs offer lower operating costs and longer endurance, making them a force multiplier for medium-sized air forces.

Comparison with International Equivalents

The ANKA-THS enters a competitive global category of MALE UAVs, alongside several well-established systems:

MQ-9 Reaper (United States)

·        Endurance: ~27 hours

·        Fully armed, combat-proven

·        Widely exported and integrated into NATO operations

Comparison: The Reaper is more mature and heavily armed, but significantly more expensive and politically restricted for export.

Wing Loong II (China)

  • Endurance: ~20 hours
  • Armed ISR platform widely exported
  • Competitive pricing

Comparison: Similar mission profile to ANKA, but China offers faster export processes; ANKA benefits from NATO-compatible systems and Turkish support.

Heron TP (Israel)

  • Endurance: 30+ hours
  • Advanced sensors and high-altitude capability
  • Premium ISR platform

Comparison: Superior in sensor sophistication and endurance, but typically more costly and subject to stricter export controls.

Bayraktar TB2 (Turkey)

  • Endurance: ~24 hours
  • Combat-proven in multiple conflicts
  • Lower-cost tactical UAV

Comparison: TB2 is smaller and more tactical, while ANKA offers greater payload capacity and strategic ISR capability.

Assessment

The ANKA-THS positions Malaysia within a growing group of countries operating sovereign long-endurance UAV surveillance systems.

While not the most advanced MALE UAV globally, it offers a balanced mix of endurance, capability, and affordability, aligned with Malaysia’s operational needs—particularly maritime surveillance rather than high-intensity strike missions.

Crucially, the program is backed by official RMAF communication, confirming that the system is already transitioning from acquisition to operational readiness.
