India’s civil aviation sector is undergoing significant change after late‑2025 operational disruptions at IndiGo, the country’s largest airline. The crisis — triggered by a combination of new pilot rest regulations and scheduling issues — resulted in thousands of flight cancellations and exposed vulnerabilities in the nation’s aviation infrastructure.
IndiGo Disruptions and Regulatory Impact
In early December 2025, IndiGo experienced a major operational meltdown that led to thousands of flights being cancelled and left many passengers stranded across airports. The chaos was linked to the airline’s failure to fully adapt to newly implemented pilot duty‑time limits, which were designed to improve safety by increasing mandatory rest periods for flight crews.
These disruptions highlighted how concentrated India’s domestic aviation market had become, with IndiGo holding a dominant share of passenger traffic and limited competition to absorb surge demand when its operations faltered.
Government Response and Market Opening
In response to the crisis and concerns about insufficient competition, India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has approved on or around 24 December 2025 the entry of several new carriers. As of late December 2025, three new domestic airlines — Shankh Air, alhindair, and FlyExpress — received regulatory no‑objection certificates (NOCs) to proceed with licensing and launch preparations. These carriers are expected to begin operations in 2026 and aim to expand consumer choice in the domestic market.
Several industry analysts see this move as part of a broader effort to reduce market concentration and improve resilience in India’s fast‑growing aviation sector, which remains one of the largest and most dynamic in the world.
Looking Ahead
Observers suggest that the entry of new airlines could spur competition, improve service quality, and create a more balanced domestic market structure. However, challenges remain, including pilot shortages, aircraft availability, and regulatory complexities that may slow rapid expansion.
