Dhaka, Bangladesh – July 29, 2026 – US-Bangla Airlines, Bangladesh’s largest private airline by fleet size, has announced a major fleet expansion programme involving the introduction of 21 Boeing 737 aircraft by the end of 2027, marking a significant step in the carrier’s strategy to strengthen its international presence and support the growth of Bangladesh’s aviation sector.
The agreement was announced on July 29, 2026 during the “Beyond with Boeing” event in Dhaka and covers the introduction of 15 Boeing 737-8 (737 MAX 8) and six Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft.
The programme represents an investment estimated at approximately US$1.5 billion. The aircraft are expected to enter the fleet through leasing arrangements with several international lessors, rather than through a direct purchase order placed by US-Bangla Airlines with Boeing.
Deliveries are scheduled progressively, with the complete fleet expansion expected by the end of 2027. The additional aircraft will provide US-Bangla Airlines with increased capacity to expand its international network, increase frequencies on existing routes and launch new services across Asia and the Middle East.
Potential future destinations associated with the expansion include Bengaluru, Colombo, Kathmandu, Beijing, Penang, Kuwait and Madinah, subject to regulatory approvals and commercial viability.
A major fleet transformation for Bangladesh’s aviation market
Before this expansion programme, US-Bangla Airlines operated a fleet of approximately 20 aircraft, combining narrow-body jets, wide-body aircraft and regional turboprops.
The existing fleet consisted of:
- three Airbus A330-300 wide-body aircraft, used mainly for high-capacity international routes, particularly towards Middle Eastern markets;
- approximately eight to nine Boeing 737-800 aircraft, forming the backbone of the airline’s medium-haul international operations;
- approximately eight to ten ATR 72-600 turboprops, mainly deployed on domestic and regional routes;
- additional regional aircraft depending on operational status and fleet updates.
This mixed fleet structure has enabled US-Bangla Airlines to serve different market segments, using ATR aircraft for domestic connectivity, Boeing 737 aircraft for regional and medium-haul international operations, and Airbus A330 aircraft for higher-demand long-range routes.
The introduction of 15 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft will represent a significant modernisation of the fleet. The 737 MAX family offers improved fuel efficiency, extended range and lower operating costs compared with previous-generation narrow-body aircraft. The additional six Boeing 737-800 aircraft will provide operational flexibility and support capacity growth during the transition period.
US-Bangla Airlines: a private Bangladeshi airline, not a U.S. carrier
Despite its name, US-Bangla Airlines is not a United States airline. The “US” reference does not indicate an American ownership structure; it comes from US-Bangla Group, a privately owned Bangladeshi business conglomerate.
Founded in 2014, US-Bangla Airlines is headquartered in Dhaka and operates from its main hub at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The company has grown from a domestic operator into Bangladesh’s largest private airline by fleet size and one of the country’s most important aviation companies.
US-Bangla Airlines is controlled by Bangladeshi private interests through US-Bangla Group. Public information does not disclose the detailed shareholder structure or the exact ownership percentages. However, the most prominent executive associated with the airline is Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Managing Director of US-Bangla Airlines, who has been a key figure in the company’s expansion strategy.
US-Bangla Group operates in several sectors of the Bangladeshi economy, including real estate, construction, manufacturing and aviation. The airline is therefore part of a broader private industrial group rather than being owned by a foreign airline or international investment fund.
Network development and international expansion strategy
US-Bangla Airlines operates both domestic and international services from Bangladesh.
Its domestic network connects major Bangladeshi cities, while its international operations focus on destinations across:
- South Asia;
- Southeast Asia;
- China;
- and the Middle East.
The airline serves markets including India, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Gulf-region destinations.
The planned Boeing 737 fleet expansion is designed to strengthen connectivity between Bangladesh and major regional economic, tourism and business centres.
Bangladesh is becoming an increasingly important aviation market, supported by economic growth, a rising middle class, international business activity, labour migration and growing demand for overseas travel.
Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport remains the country’s main aviation gateway, while airport infrastructure development is expected to support future traffic growth.
Building a broader aviation ecosystem
The 21-aircraft programme is not only a fleet expansion initiative but also part of US-Bangla Airlines’ broader ambition to develop into a more integrated aviation group and strengthen Bangladesh’s aviation ecosystem.
Beyond passenger operations, the company has announced plans to expand capabilities in strategic areas including:
- aircraft maintenance and repair;
- pilot and technical training;
- air cargo;
- digital technologies;
- aviation infrastructure.
These initiatives aim to increase Bangladesh’s own aviation capabilities, reduce dependence on external providers and create a broader platform capable of supporting long-term growth.
By combining airline operations with additional aviation services, US-Bangla Airlines aims to position itself as a regional aviation player rather than solely a passenger carrier.
Competition in Bangladesh and South Asia
US-Bangla Airlines operates in an increasingly competitive aviation environment.
Its main domestic competitor is Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the country’s national flag carrier. Biman benefits from a longer operating history, a wider international network and a fleet strategy focused on larger Boeing aircraft, including wide-bodies for long-haul operations.
US-Bangla has followed a different model, positioning itself as a privately managed airline focused on commercial flexibility, rapid expansion and market responsiveness.
The airline also competes with major foreign carriers operating from Dhaka, particularly airlines from the Gulf region and Asia that benefit from extensive connecting networks.
Gulf carriers use their Middle Eastern hubs to connect Bangladesh with Europe, Africa and North America, while Asian airlines compete on regional routes linked to business and tourism markets.
The expansion strategy of US-Bangla Airlines reflects its ambition to capture a larger share of Bangladesh’s international passenger traffic, which remains significantly served by foreign airlines.
Outlook
With the planned introduction of 21 Boeing 737 aircraft — including 15 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and six Boeing 737-800 — through leasing arrangements by the end of 2027, US-Bangla Airlines is entering its most ambitious growth phase since its creation.
The programme is expected to increase capacity, modernise the fleet, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the airline’s position as Bangladesh’s leading private carrier.
The success of the expansion will depend on several factors, including aircraft delivery schedules, leasing arrangements, regulatory approvals, airport infrastructure development, route profitability and the airline’s ability to compete against established regional and global carriers.
For Bangladesh, the development of US-Bangla Airlines represents the emergence of a stronger private aviation player capable of supporting the country’s integration into the regional and global air transport network.
