Germany has announced an order for 20 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of “Tranche 5.” Signed on October 15, the contract provides for final assembly in Manching and deliveries to the Luftwaffe staggered between 2031 and 2034.
The order is valued at €3.75 billion, following approval by the Bundestag’s budget committee on October 8. The purchase aims to strengthen Germany’s air-superiority and electronic-warfare capabilities in line with its NATO commitments.
The aircraft will feature next-generation sensors, including the E-Scan AESA radar. In parallel, Germany plans to integrate the Arexis electronic-warfare system (Saab) and upgrade part of the fleet to the Eurofighter EK (Elektronischer Kampf) standard for SEAD/DEAD missions (Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses).
The first aircraft is due for delivery in 2031, with the final unit arriving in 2034. Assembly will take place on the final assembly line (FAL) in Manching, near Munich. This order forms part of Germany’s broader airpower modernization: the Tranche 5 Eurofighters are intended to assume and expand capabilities inherited from the Tornado, pending future solutions expected around 2040.
