According to the white paper, which was made public at the recent RTAF Symposium 2024 seminar, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) aims to utilize next year’s budget to purchase 12 fighter jets, middle-range air defense systems, and anti-drone technologies. Additionally, plans are underway to acquire more helicopters, along with training aircraft. Several air security projects are currently in the pipeline.
The purchase of a new fleet of fighter jets is intended to replace the aging F-16 jets, which are due to be decommissioned in 2028. The acquisition scheme will be divided into three phases, with the first phase commencing in the 2025 fiscal year, starting in October. The first phase of procurement, involving four jet fighters estimated to cost 19 billion baht, has been submitted to the Defense Ministry and will be forwarded to the cabinet.
