Trent 1000 XE new technology

The introduction of the Trent 1000 XE follows the successful certification of a package of improvements including a new High Pressure Turbine (HPT) blade that has been engineered for longer life. With a comprehensive blade and cooling system redesign that delivers a 40% increase in cooling flow, we are significantly reducing the temperature of the blade and dramatically increasing the engines time on wing.

With the incorporation of this new HPT blade package and subsequent hot-section enhancements already in development and available in 2026, our current and future Trent 1000 XE customers can expect a time on wing three times that of the Trent 1000 TEN they have been operating to date.

The Trent 1000 XE is now our current new production standard engine powering all future deliveries of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and we are already in the process of upgrading all our Trent 1000 TEN customers to this latest standard of engine, transforming their experience of operating their 787s.

Introducing the Trent 1000 XE

WATCH

Capitalising on the architecture and technologies of previous generations of Trent engine, the Trent 1000 has been designed and optimised to power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family of aircraft.

The Trent 1000 powered Boeing 787 Dreamliner is up to 25% more efficient than the Boeing 767 aircraft it replaces. Three shaft architecture better supports “all electric” aircraft with a bleed-less engine system. The result? A more stable operating cycle.

Since its entry into service in 2011 we have continuously improved the fuel efficiency, capability and durability of the Trent 1000 and our engineers continue to explore opportunities to improve the engine and in-service support, to ensure we are always delivering the maximum value to our customers.

Technology

  • IP power offtake – efficiently drives the aircraft electrical systems while improving engine handling and operability at low power. The all-electric architecture of the Boeing 787 aircraft requires that no bleed air is taken from the engine, but up to 500kW of power is extracted from each engine to drive the aircraft systems.
  • 10:1 bypass ratio is the highest bypass ratio of any Trent, a key feature providing fuel efficiency and reduced noise. Over 85% of the engine’s thrust is generated by the 2.8m diameter fan.
  • Low hub:tip ratio maximises airflow at a given fan diameter and improves FOD protection to deliver superior performance retention.
  • A heated ESS (Engine Section Stator) system delivers advanced ice protection, reducing operational burden in cold or high-moisture environments.
  • Adaptive HP cooling system lowers fuel burn and delivers better engine performance retention.
  • New improved HP turbine with advanced cooling systems to enable more thrust and efficiency and now even more durability
