A UPS Airlines cargo jet — a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F — crashed Tuesday evening near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, Kentucky, shortly after take-off when its left engine detached during the take-off roll. At least 12 people have been confirmed dead, including the three-member crew, and multiple others are injured.
The National Transportation Safety Board reported a fire erupting in the left wing soon after clearance for departure, and video footage shows the engine separating before the aircraft crashed.
The plane was carrying approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel and crashed into buildings near the airport, triggering secondary explosions at a petroleum-recycling facility and an auto salvage yard.
Investigators retrieved the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, and have warned that the full investigation may take up to a year or more.
UPS expressed its deep sadness, and its major Louisville “Worldport” hub temporarily ceased operations while authorities and community members respond to the aftermath.
