During the 88th Anniversary of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF), Air Chief Marshal Phanphakdee Phattanakul revealed that RTAF is making significant strides toward becoming a force capable of joint operations with regional counterparts while also enhancing its ability to support civilian populations. Guided by the principle of “efficiency and quality over quantity”, the RTAF is committed to strategic resource management in force preparation, multi-dimensional development, and modernization— despite budgetary constraints. As outlined in the Air Force White Paper, key modernization initiatives include:
- Procurement of next-generation fighter aircraft to replace aging platforms
- Acquisition of aerial refueling aircraft to extend operational reach and endurance
- Integration of armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance combat effectiveness
- Procurement of a medium- and long-range integrated air defense system
Thailand’s first-ever A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) is set to join the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) fleet as part of its ongoing modernization efforts. Air Chief Marshal Phanphakdee Phattanakul, RTAF Commander-in-Chief, has confirmed the acquisition of this versatile aircraft from Airbus, which will serve both as a mid-air refueling platform and a VIP transport aircraft. Designed to enhance operational effectiveness, the A330 MRTT will extend the flight endurance of F-16s and Gripens while also being equipped with emergency medical support, including EMS beds for medical evacuations. This new addition will replace the aging Airbus A340, which is set to be decommissioned soon. The procurement, funded under the 2025 budget allocated by the Prime Minister’s Office, is expected to be finalized within this year, with the aircraft projected for delivery between 2028 and 2029. The total estimated budget for the project is 12 billion baht.
