Interview with Mr Sylvain Bataillard

Interview with Mr Sylvain Bataillard

Interview with Mr Sylvain Bataillard, Strategy Director and Co-founder of Hyprspace on April 14, 2025

Hyprspace is developing innovative technology with reusable engines and launchers using hybrid propulsion, combining the advantages of liquid and solid propellant engines. This reduces launch costs. Hyprspace plans to develop and produce launchers capable of carrying 250 kg of payload, and to offer microgravity experiments on suborbital launchers. It also plans to build larger launchers.

The startup currently employs 80 people and stands out for its technological choice, using a simple valve instead of a turbo-pump for ergol supply. Hyprspace also competes with Rocket Lab (USA), MaiaSpace (Fr, ArianeGroup), Lattitude (Fr) and Sirius (Fr), but has announced a more economical solution than its competitors.

Hyprspace has received 35 million euros from France 2030 and 50 million euros in launch purchases from CNES, but payment of the bulk of the France 2030 sum is conditional on a successful first flight between 2026 and 2028. The company is also preparing to raise private and European funds.

Hyprspace is developing a low-cost suborbital demonstrator with a height of 7 meters, a diameter of 100 cm and a take-off weight of 2.5 tons.

The engine will deliver 100 kilo-Newton (kN) thrust for 120 seconds, capable of placing a 200-250 kg load in low Earth orbit. The company is aiming for a first flight in 2027.

Hyprspace’s success also relies on a team of space enthusiasts. The three co-founders – Alexandre Mangeot, President and CTO, Vincent Rocher, who specializes in onboard electronics, and Sylvain Bataillard, an aeronautical engineer by training, who is Strategy Director – have succeeded in instilling an innovative and ambitious dynamic into the startup.

Based in Bordeaux, close to Ariane Group, Hyprspace is recruiting for positions in engineering, from combustion to structure, as well as electronics.
