Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a state-owned Indian company, has signed an agreement with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to locally produce the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional aircraft in India. This move marks a significant step in strengthening India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities.
Strategic Partnership
The agreement, structured as a memorandum of understanding (MoU), allows HAL to manufacture the Superjet 100 under license, combining Russian design expertise with Indian industrial capacity. HAL will oversee assembly and integration of the aircraft components, leveraging its experience in both military and civilian aerospace projects.
The project aims to:
- Develop local production capabilities for regional passenger aircraft.
- Support Make in India initiatives in the aviation sector.
- Facilitate technology transfer and skill development in aerospace engineering.
Technical and Operational Scope
The Superjet 100 is a 75–100 seat regional jet, designed for short- to medium-haul routes. HAL will focus on producing key airframe components and performing assembly and testing in India, while UAC will continue to supply critical systems and maintain oversight on quality assurance.
This collaboration is expected to enhance the availability of regional jets in India and neighboring markets, providing more options for domestic airlines and contributing to the modernization of regional air transport infrastructure.
Broader Impact
- Strengthens HAL’s civil aviation portfolio alongside its established military programs.
- Supports economic growth by creating high-skilled jobs in aerospace manufacturing.
- Increases India-Russia cooperation in aerospace and defense industries.
