Three 20 minute Lectures by Students from IPSA and ENSAT followed by “Collaborative Development of the UltraFan – a Very High Bypass Ratio future Powerplant”
Andy GEER*,
Chief Engineer Rolls-Royce UltraFan Demonstrator and Thierry DUTIL, Airbus Head of Nacelle Integrated Solutions at 18:00 on Tuesday11th February 2020 in the Symposium Room, B01 Airbus SAS/Campus 1, Blagnac
Part of the role of a Learned Society is to encourage people to join the industry and help them continue to develop their professional skills. We are therefore grateful to Rolls-Royce for again sponsoring our annual student Mini-Lecture Competition. This is an annual event to enable university students near Toulouse whose native language is NOT English to improve their confidence and presentation skills by giving 20 minute lectures in English on any aeronautical or aerospace related subject. Rolls-Royce also provides a lecture which is held while the mini-lectures are being judged.
We are again in debt to Joseph Shea, Directeur du Centre des Sciences Humaines at INSA-Toulouse who has selected the following 3 finalists from applicants when they gave presentations at their universities in the Toulouse area.
Emile MAGADUR
ENSAT – “Biomimicry: An Application for Astronaut Training”
Sihem BOUBAKER
ENSAT – “Birds & Planes: Reconciling Wildlife & Human Activities to become Sustainable”
Clara SAUTERAU du PART
IPSA – “James Webb Telescope”
After the students’ presentations Andy GEER, Chief Engineer Rolls-Royce UltraFan Demonstrator and Thierry DUTIL, Airbus Head of Nacelle Integrated Solutions will give their lecture –
“Collaborative Development of the UltraFan – a Very High Bypass Ratio future Powerplant”.
Following the results announced by the judges the Mini-Lecture Competitors will be presented with their trophies by Andy & Thierry.
For the winner a Rolls-Royce large Fan Blade Trophy to be retained for a year. All three finalists receive gifts from Rolls-Royce, plus €100 and an offer of a return airfare to London paid by the RAeS Toulouse Branch primarily to visit the RAeS headquarters or Rolls-Royce, and/or attend an RAeS event. Finalists have recently travelled to Derby where a previous R-R speaker Ian Rainbow arranged for a recent Rolls-Royce recruit showed them around the Rolls-Royce facility. Last years they also visited the Rolls-Royce ACCEL electric aircraft project at Gloucester.
All students are now granted free RAeS Student Membership while they are at university.
We hope to see you at 18:00 on Tuesday 11th February to give a great welcome to our three brave student lecture competitors and then to hear how Rolls-Royce and Airbus are working together to develop a most efficient engine of the future.
