A strategic decision that strengthens ATR’s presence in Africa and supports domestic connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Dubai, 18 November 2025 – The world’s leading regional aircraft manufacturer, ATR, is proud to announce that Ethiopian Airlines will lease two brand new ATR 72-600 aircraft, which will be operated by Air Congo, the national airline of the Democratic Republic of Congo, 49% owned by Ethiopian Airlines. The aircraft are scheduled to enter service in February 2026.
This agreement marks a significant milestone in ATR’s expansion across Africa, as Ethiopian Airlines—the continent’s most influential carrier—selects the most advanced, fuel-efficient and cost-effective regional aircraft to connect remote regions across the Congo. This leasing contract follows the strategic partnership unveiled at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2024, where ATR and Ethiopian Airlines agreed to cooperate on developing ATR maintenance capabilities in Ethiopia. This initiative will enable Ethiopian Airlines to position itself as an MRO hub for ATR aircraft in the region, serving operators across the continent.
“With the arrival of these new ATRs and the development of our MRO capabilities to support them, Ethiopian Airlines is ready to offer a complete ATR solution, providing African airlines with a broader range of options to operate regional connections across the continent,” said Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. “We are proud to contribute to strengthening regional mobility in Africa and to bring comfortable, convenient and fast air transport to more communities.”
Mesfin Biru Weldegeorgis, CEO of Air Congo, added: “Air Congo is proud to expand its footprint in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the introduction of two brand new ATR 72-600s powered by PW127XT engines. These aircraft are the first of their kind in the country, enabling us to serve remote airports, improve domestic connectivity, stimulate economic development and reinforce national cohesion.”
Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, ATR’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “Trust is built over time. Getting to know ATR better was decisive for Ethiopian Airlines and Air Congo in their choice to invest in our platform, and we are honoured by their confidence. With nearly 30% fleet growth over the past three years, ATR is strengthening its presence in Africa and helping rebuild a complete ecosystem to support our operators and prospects in the best possible conditions. The recent ATR acquisitions in the region confirm that our products are perfectly suited to opening new routes and supporting regional growth. Their ability to operate profitably, even with lower load factors, makes them the ideal solution for emerging markets, where geographic and economic accessibility are essential to unlocking connectivity.”
The Democratic Republic of Congo is emerging as a strategic market with strong potential to meet a growing demand for regional connectivity, driven by rapid development and increasing need for reliable air transport. This announcement highlights ATR’s long-term commitment to Africa, where regional aviation acts as a key driver of economic and social progress. By combining aircraft delivery with the strengthening of strategic support infrastructure, ATR is helping to build a more connected and resilient future for the continent.
