Aeromexico Commits to Buy 100 Boeing Airplanes

MEXICO CITY--Mexico's biggest airline operator, Grupo Aeromexico SAB (AEROMEX.MX), said Wednesday it has signed a letter of intent to acquire 100 new planes from Boeing Co. (BA) in a deal valued at $11 billion, based on list prices.

The planned order consists of 90 Boeing 737 Max aircraft and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in what Aeromexico said represents the biggest fleet investment in the history of Mexican aviation.

Aeromexico also said it will be the first airline in Latin America to operate both aircraft.

The order is in addition to nine 787-8 Dreamliners that Aeromexico had already anticipated purchasing, and on top of an acquisition announced in 2011 of 10 Boeing 737-8 NGs and 10 Embraer SA (ERJ) 190s. The airline expects to receive its first Dreamliner in summer 2013, while the 737 Max planes should begin to arrive in 2018.

The planes are expected to enable Aeromexico to fly greater distances, while also reducing its maintenance costs.

"This equipment represents a jump in Aeromexico's fleet technology, and will give us one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the world, significantly reducing the impact on the environment in addition to consolidating the group's fleet into just two types of cabins," Aeromexico Chief Executive Andres Conesa said.

In a subsequent conference call, he said that if completed, the purchase will enable Aeromexico to maintain "a very young fleet" over the next 15 to 20 years. As of end-June, the average age of the company's aircraft was nine years.

The carrier will need to come up with a pre-delivery payment for the aircraft of $40 million before the end of the year, money which Mr. Conesa said the company can easily finance via its cash position. Aeromexico hasn't yet decided on what combination of cash and credit it might rely on to finance the rest.

Aeromexico aims to increase its portion of owned aircraft in the coming years to as much as two-thirds of its fleet, he said, so as to reduce its expenses for lease payments. Currently it owns less than 15% of its aircraft.

As of end-June, Aeromexico had a fleet of 109 leased and owned aircraft. Should the Mexican economy fare well, then Aeromexico could nearly double its fleet over the next decade, Mr. Conesa estimated. The Mexican economy is widely seen expanding by 3.7% this year after gross domestic product rose 4.6% year-on-year in the first quarter.

Aeromexico, meanwhile, has benefited significantly from increased passenger traffic since the 2010 bankruptcy of its chief domestic rival, flagship Mexican airline Mexicana.

The airline has increased its capacity to accommodate greater demand mostly on routes between the U.S. and Mexico. Mr. Conesa said that advance bookings show that demand in the coming months isn't slowing. The carrier's total passenger traffic rose 6% on the year in the first half of 2012, with a load factor just under 77%.

Aeromexico transported 14 million passengers last year. The company operates around 600 routes to 45 domestic and 32 international destinations. Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) owns 3.5% of Aeromexico, and the two airlines are members of the SkyTeam global marketing alliance.
