GULF AIR BOARD OF DIRECTORS ACCEPTS RESIGNATION OF CEO
Friday, 30 November 2012 18:22 The Board of Directors of Gulf Air has announced that it has accepted the resignation of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Samer Majali, submitted earlier this year following the appointment of the Gulf Air Board of Directors in mid-November. Mr. Majali will remain in his position until the end of 2012.
Mr. Majali joined Gulf Air in 2009, when he introduced a restructuring plan to build a national airline that would effective serve the people and the economy of Bahrain and ultimately ensure its long term future and success. During 2010 the airline made significant progress towards commercial sustainability, significantly cutting costs, increasing revenue and reducing operating losses by over BHD 50 million despite a difficult operating environment characterised by high-fuel costs and increased competition.
In 2011 the combination of local and regional developments and global economic pressures disrupted the airline’s financial targets. Despite this setback significant milestones were achieved across its customer product and service offering.
The Gulf Air Board of Directors expressed their thanks to Mr. Majali for his contribution to Gulf Air and the strong leadership he has shown over the last three years. Noting in particular the significant improvements made across the airline specifically in the areas of fleet renewal, service enhancement, operational efficiency and on-time performance.
They also recognised the achievement of Mr. Majali following the successful renegotiations of the airline’s order book resulting in the reduction of the long-term financial liability of the airline by approximately 50%.
Mr. Majali thanked His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his leadership, His Royal Highness the Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa for his support, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa for his trust, confidence and guidance and finally the Members of the Gulf Air Board of Directors for their counsel.
He also thanked the employees and management of Gulf Air for their support and their hard work towards achieving significant progress during the last three years in a challenging operating environment.
Finally he stressed the importance of Gulf Air to the Kingdom and economy of Bahrain and wished the airline every success in the implementation of the new strategy. | | Date parution : 04/12/2012 | | catégorie : Autre | | Modifier votre profil

| | BARTON Captain Lynn 51 ans | | pilot | | British Airways |
|
Captain Lynn Barton will be the first pilot to fly into Heathrow’s Terminal 5 when it opens for business on Thursday morning (March 27).
Lynn, who previously earned her place in British Airways’ history as its first woman pilot, will be commanding BA026 from Hong Kong, which is scheduled to be the first arrival at the airline’s new £4.3bn home.
Lynn applied to operate the flight last month while she was on holiday in Barbados. She said “It was my husband’s idea to bid for the flight, but the timing meant I had to tear myself off the beach and find a computer so that I could apply through the airline’s flight- bidding system. I never thought I’d be in with a chance of actually getting the flight.”
“I found out when I got back from my holiday and was absolutely thrilled. Terminal 5 has been the focus of the airline’s future for several years now, and to operate the very first flight is a huge honour. I can’t wait,” she said.
Lynn, now 51, became British Airways’ first female pilot in 1987 when she joined the Boeing 747 fleet. Eight years earlier, she had been the first woman to be sponsored by the airline for her commercial pilot’s training at Hamble in Hampshire.
“I never thought of being anything other than a pilot when I was growing up. I had my very first flying lesson at the age of 16. I was incredibly proud to have been British Airways’ first ever woman pilot and now I have another first to my name!”
The new terminal building, which is for the exclusive use of British Airways customers, is more than five times the size of Terminal 4, and will give customers a much calmer, more relaxing and smoother airport experience.
“I’m already planning my passenger announcement for the first ever landing at Terminal 5. I want to make sure that I mark the occasion so that every one of my passengers can be part of history too.”
Since Lynn became the first female BA pilot in 1987 the number has risen dramatically and there are now 175 females among BA’s 3,200 pilots, which is significantly higher than the national average.
Lynn is not the only member of her family with a passion for flying. Her husband, Mike, has a private pilot’s licence and is currently building a new two-seater aircraft in their garage. Lynn said: “I don’t have a private licence any more so poor Mike has a very knowledgeable, but nagging co-pilot when we fly together.”
They live near Alton, Hampshire. Lynn, has a stepdaughter currently expecting her second child. | | Date parution : 26/03/2008 | | catégorie : Autre | | Modifier votre profil

Mr. Bisignani has served as Director General and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since June 2002. During his tenure with IATA he has completely restructured the association to increase its relevance and speed in driving a broad agenda for industry change.
Since 2002 IATA has spearheaded an industry agenda to enhance safety, improve efficiency and focus governments on the long-term issues for industry viability - including liberalisation and a common-sense approach to issues such as the environment and taxation. As a result, two major IATA initiatives are re-shaping important parts of the industry. And IATA's Simplifying the Business programme will use technology to improve customer convenience while eliminating US$6.5 billion in annual costs.
Mr. Bisignani's airline experience includes 5 years at the helm of Alitalia as CEO and Managing Director, during which time he also served on the IATA Executive Committee and was Chairman of the AEA (Association of European Airlines). |
At 40 years of age Stelios, who prefers to be called by his first name, is best known for creating easyJet PLC when he was 28. He is often credited as the pioneer who changed the European aviation scene for the benefit of millions of consumers. easyJet is Europe's leading low-fares airline, currently (December 07) operating 137 aircraft on 359 routes between 89 airports in 23 countries. easyJet carried over 38 million passengers in the past 12 months. easyJet PLC was partially floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2000 but Stelios remains the largest single shareholder. A serial entrepreneur, Stelios has established more than 17 ventures, the first of which was Stelmar Shipping at the age of 25. In November 2006 Stelios received a knighthood from Queen Elisabeth II for services to entrepreneurship.
Stelios floated Stelmar Shipping on the NYSE in 2001 and in 2005 he sold it to OSG Shipping Group for approximately $1.3 Billion. Nowadays, acting through his private investment vehicle, the easyGroup, which owns the easy brand and licenses it to the various easy branded ventures, including the airline, Stelios sees himself more as the manager of the brand and less as a manager of one of the companies. He continues to extend the brand by creating new easy branded ventures in the areas of travel, leisure, telecoms and personal finance.
easyJet PLC which is Europe's largest low cost airline by revenues with a fleet of 122 jets and growing, carried 33 million passengers in 2006. The other easyGroup businesses are detailed on the easyGroup portal www.easy.com. The travel related businesses also include easyCar, which provides low cost car rental in more than 2,400 locations globally; easyCruise, introducing a younger age group to cruising in various parts of the world; easyBus, which provides low cost bus transportation between airports and city centres; and easyHotel, which is growing rapidly around the world by providing great value accommodation in city centres. The businesses outside the travel industry cover areas as diverse as Internet cafés, online price comparison, personal finance, cinema, male toiletries, online recruitment, pizza delivery, music downloads, mobile telephony, and wrist watches!
Stelios was born in Greece on the 14th of February, 1967 , the middle child of Loucas and Nedi Haji-Ioannou. He was educated in Athens to High School level and in 1984 continued his education at the London School of Economics. He also graduated from the City University Business School with an MSC in Shipping Trade and Economics. Stelios has also been awarded a total of three honorary doctorates from Liverpool John Moores University, Cass Business School City University and the Cranfield University.
On the "giving something back" side, Stelios is interested in education for under-privileged students and sustainable development. In 1992 he founded CYMEPA, the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association. This is a non-profit making association of ship owners and Cyprus-based business people who believe in sustainable development. Stelios recently endowed this association with a further gift worth more than $600,000. In 2005 he made a pledge to both his alma mater, the London School of Economics and the City of London Cass Business School , worth £3m for the funding of 100 scholarships over 10 years in each establishment. The students will be known as the Stelios Scholars. In 2006 he established the Disabled Entrepreneur of the Year Award with the disability charity Leonard Cheshire, with £50,000 going to the winner. Also in 2006 he sold his private art collection, which once filled the walls of the now sold Stelmar Shipping, for a total of 730,000 euros, the proceeds of which went to a Greek children's charity. | | Date parution : 06/02/2008 | | catégorie : Autre | | Modifier votre profil

| | HARTMAN Peter | | Chairman of the Association of European Airlines | | Association of European Airlines |
|
The Association of European Airlines, representing Europe’s major network carriers, has announced that Peter Hartman, President and Chief Executive Officer of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, will chair the Association in 2008. Mr Hartman takes over from Fernando Conte, Chairman and CEO of Iberia.
KLM was one of the four founding members of AEA and 2008 will be the eighth year the airline has held the chair, a record unsurpassed by any other AEA member.
Peter Hartman succeeded Leo van Wijk at the helm of KLM in 2007, crowning a career with the airline which began in 1973 and has encompassed senior posts in a broad range of the airline’s activities, from Engineering & Maintenance to Personnel, from Ground Operations to Customer Services.
Mr Hartman will guide AEA through a year in which many challenges will confront the industry. The business environment is expected to become tougher as the global economy cools down, while cost pressures persist all along the aviation value chain.
Two value chain items in particular will command Mr Hartman’s attention. “After a long period in which AEA’s persistent calls for regulatory intervention in the airport sector went unheeded”, he said, “we were happy to see the European Commission took our arguments in this respect seriously and launched a regulatory intervention in the airport sector in the form of the Commission’s Airport Package”.
“The Airport Package has been accurately described as an important first step, but we must continue to press for further liberalisation of ground handling, a proper economic regulation of airport charges and – in particular – a political commitment to head off the capacity crunch which threatens to strangle the development of Europe’s hub airports, jeopardising their global competitiveness and damaging the airlines’ progress in limiting their environmental impact”.
Even more important for his chairmanship, said Peter Hartman, was achieving progress in 2008 towards transforming European air traffic management into the Single European Sky. “In April, it will be four years since we saw the enactment of the first phase of Single Sky legislation, and it is about time we started seeing some of the massive potential improvements that the programme has to offer. The current patchwork of European ATM imposes huge penalties on the airlines and their passengers in terms of cost and delay, and on the environment in terms of unnecessary emissions”.
“The second phase of the project will trigger a period of intense activity for AEA in 2008, as we seek to ensure that the vision of the Single Sky is not compromised by intransigence or inertia on the part of the National States”.
Mr Hartman welcomed AEA’s two new member airlines from the Ukraine, Aerosvit and Ukraine International, expanding the horizons of AEA and bringing an exciting new dimension to the scope of the Association. He also welcomed to the AEA Presidents’ Committee – the supervisory board of the association – Alfred Oetsch of Austrian and Philippe Vander Putten of Brussels Airlines, who will join Fernando Conte of Iberia, Jean-Cyril Spinetta of Air France, Willie Walsh of British Airways, Ivan Misetic of Croatia Airlines, Jukka Hienonen of Finnair, Wolfgang Mayrhuber of Lufthansa, Mats Jansson of SAS, Fernando Pinto of TAP Portugal and Steve Ridgway of Virgin Atlantic Airways.

| | MALLYA VIJAY 50 ans | | Chairman of United Breweries | | UB Group |
|
Vijay Mallya, 50, was elected as Chairman of United Breweries by shareholders, following the demise of his late father in 1983 at the young age of 28.
Prior to being entrusted with the responsibilities of a classical Indian corporate conglomerate, Vijay Mallya worked for the American Hoechst Corporation (now Sanofi-Aventis) in the USA and with Jenson & Nicholson in the U.K. Since 1980, he assisted his father, then Chairman of The UB Group in managing the important Brewing and Spirits Divisions and in re-launching the Kingfisher Brand of Beer. In 1983, the sales volume of the UB Spirits division was approximately 2.85 million cases and UB’s beer business trailed behind that of Golden Eagle from Mohan Meakins. Also included in the Group were activities such as Pharmaceuticals, Agrochemicals, Paints, Petrochemicals and Plastics, the manufacture of Electro-mechanical Batteries, the manufacture of food products and carbonated beverages, a fast-food Pizza chain and several medium and small scale industrial units.
Upon assuming the position of Chairman in October 1983, Vijay Mallya initiated the process of defining a corporate structure with performance accountability, inducting professional management and consolidating the unwieldy empire into individual operating divisions.
In 1988, Vijay Mallya became a non-resident Indian to pursue global opportunities and to transform The UB Group into India’s first multinational. While, in the initial stages, overseas representative offices had been commissioned, the real break was in 1988 when Vijay Mallya, in a leveraged buyout acquired the global Berger Paints Group with operating companies across four continents. The exit strategy for this investment was profitably executed when Vijay Mallya successfully directed five Initial Public Offerings on the London, Singapore (Main Boards), Nairobi, Jamaica and Abidjan Stock Exchanges. The paints business was divested for significant value in 1996.
Vijay Mallya also founded a software company in the USA in 1993 which was subsequently listed on the NASDAQ in 1996 and which provides a considerable window of opportunity to the vast US market. He also initiated several ventures for the promotion and globalization of UB brands and, in particular, Kingfisher and McDowell.
In 1990, following the Government of India’s liberalised economic policies, Vijay Mallya decided that the UB Group would only retain interests in businesses that were globally competitive and which did not depend upon fiscal tariff protection. He also decided to focus on areas of core competence and transformed the vastly diversified UB conglomerate into a handful of key operating businesses.
