“easyJet a un extraordinaire avenir devant lui, en poursuivant sa croissance rapide et en renforçant sa position de leader au sein d’un marché des compagnies low-cost, en plein expansion. Je suis impatient de diriger l’ensemble du personnel d’eayJet pour construire cet avenir ensemble.”

HARTMAN Peter
Chairman of the Association of European Airlines
Association of European Airlines
The Association of European Airlines, representing Europe’s major network carriers, has announced that Peter Hartman, President and Chief Executive Officer of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, will chair the Association in 2008. Mr Hartman takes over from Fernando Conte, Chairman and CEO of Iberia.
KLM was one of the four founding members of AEA and 2008 will be the eighth year the airline has held the chair, a record unsurpassed by any other AEA member.
Peter Hartman succeeded Leo van Wijk at the helm of KLM in 2007, crowning a career with the airline which began in 1973 and has encompassed senior posts in a broad range of the airline’s activities, from Engineering & Maintenance to Personnel, from Ground Operations to Customer Services.
Mr Hartman will guide AEA through a year in which many challenges will confront the industry. The business environment is expected to become tougher as the global economy cools down, while cost pressures persist all along the aviation value chain.
Two value chain items in particular will command Mr Hartman’s attention. “After a long period in which AEA’s persistent calls for regulatory intervention in the airport sector went unheeded”, he said, “we were happy to see the European Commission took our arguments in this respect seriously and launched a regulatory intervention in the airport sector in the form of the Commission’s Airport Package”.
“The Airport Package has been accurately described as an important first step, but we must continue to press for further liberalisation of ground handling, a proper economic regulation of airport charges and – in particular – a political commitment to head off the capacity crunch which threatens to strangle the development of Europe’s hub airports, jeopardising their global competitiveness and damaging the airlines’ progress in limiting their environmental impact”.
Even more important for his chairmanship, said Peter Hartman, was achieving progress in 2008 towards transforming European air traffic management into the Single European Sky. “In April, it will be four years since we saw the enactment of the first phase of Single Sky legislation, and it is about time we started seeing some of the massive potential improvements that the programme has to offer. The current patchwork of European ATM imposes huge penalties on the airlines and their passengers in terms of cost and delay, and on the environment in terms of unnecessary emissions”.
“The second phase of the project will trigger a period of intense activity for AEA in 2008, as we seek to ensure that the vision of the Single Sky is not compromised by intransigence or inertia on the part of the National States”.
Mr Hartman welcomed AEA’s two new member airlines from the Ukraine, Aerosvit and Ukraine International, expanding the horizons of AEA and bringing an exciting new dimension to the scope of the Association. He also welcomed to the AEA Presidents’ Committee – the supervisory board of the association – Alfred Oetsch of Austrian and Philippe Vander Putten of Brussels Airlines, who will join Fernando Conte of Iberia, Jean-Cyril Spinetta of Air France, Willie Walsh of British Airways, Ivan Misetic of Croatia Airlines, Jukka Hienonen of Finnair, Wolfgang Mayrhuber of Lufthansa, Mats Jansson of SAS, Fernando Pinto of TAP Portugal and Steve Ridgway of Virgin Atlantic Airways.

HARVEY Keith 26/03/1928
Founder of Rotor-Tech International
Rotor-Tech International
In memoriam: Helicopter Industry Pioneer Keith Harvey 1928 - 2008

Keith Harvey, a Helicopter Industry Pioneer, died on April 22, 2008 at the age of 80. Keith Harvey was born in Grant Township, Michigan on March 26, 1928 and was united in marriage to Thomasina Williams Harvey on December 5, 1947.

Keith Harvey began his career in 1947 while still in his teens and attending college, working for Parsons Corporation in Traverse City Michigan manufacturing the Sikorsky R4 tail rotor blades and the Bell 47 main rotor wood blades. Until 1956, he managed the Bell 47 and Hiller main rotor blade production and was involved in the development of the Hiller Hornet main rotor blade, Hiller Flying Platform blade, Schnitzer Flying Platform blade, Parsons Fiberglass blade, Westland Skeeter main rotor blade and numerous other experimental projects.

Keith started the first FAA approved rotor blade repair station for Parsons of California in 1956. During the Vietnam War, they repaired thousands of Huey blades that were loaded on C5’s at Stockton Field and flown directly to Vietnam. During the later part of his career at Parsons of California, they began building bonded structures, including the space gondolas, OSO Satellite orbital solar panels, large structures to transport the F1 Saturn engines to Cape Canaveral in the Pregnant Guppy and other projects for the space program.

In 1972, Keith started his own rotor blade repair facility, Composite Technology Inc., located in Stockton, California. In the coming years CTI added facilities in Dallas, Texas; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Highpoint, North Carolina; Madrid, Spain, and Singapore. During this time, he aggressively developed new technology and rotor blade repair techniques with one goal in mind, better and faster rotor blade repair without compromising quality. Several of his innovative ideas are still being used by the manufacturers today.

Keith completed his pilot training and received his pilot’s license in 1978. He owned and restored a number of aircraft including a De Havilland Tiger Moth and Bell 47D helicopter. In recent years, he has enjoyed working with the Hiller Museum and Classic Rotors on numerous helicopter restoration projects. He donated and loaned several helicopters to support these projects.

After CTI was sold in 1990, he “retired” and started farming cherries and grapes in the Central Valley of California.

In 1996 Keith and a group of friends founded Rotor-Tech International, another successful FAA certified rotor blade repair facility.

Keith was also a member of many aeronautical organizations including Helicopter Association International, Twirly Birds, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Hiller Aviation Museum and Institute and the Bell 47 Helicopter Association.

He received well deserved recognition from the National Guard for Contributing to National Security and Protecting Liberty and Freedom.

Keith Harvey was an enthusiastic, innovative and highly productive leader of the aviation community for almost six decades and he will be missed by everyone.

Memorial Services for Keith Harvey will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at the Temple Baptist Church, 801 S. Lower Sacramento Road, Lodi, California.

In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in his name for Hiller Aviation Institute and Museum, 601 Skyway Road, San Carlos, CA 94070 and Lodi Memorial West Hospital, P.O. Box 3004, Lodi, CA 95241.

Heinonen Timo
Managing Director
Aurinkomatkat - Suntours Ltd Ab
16 November 2005

Aurinkomatkat's Timo Heinonen to retire

Changes will take place in the management of Finland's largest tour operator, Oy Aurinkomatkat - Suntours Ltd Ab, when long-term Managing Director Timo Heinonen retires at the end of the year. Heinonen will be succeeded at the beginning of next year by the company's present Marketing Director Jukka Salama, 60. Corporate Development Director Tom Selänniemi, 39, has been appointed Deputy Managing Director.

The retiring Heinonen joined the Finnair Group in 1966. He initially worked in Finnair's charter flight department in various positions, including head of department. Heinonen has served as managing director of Aurinkomatkat since 1978, some 27 years.

"During Heinonen's time, Aurinkomatkat has grown to become Finland's number one brand and the market leader in the package tour business. Under his leadership, Aurinkomatkat has been developed into an enterprise suitable for the whole family. In recent decades we have seen the growth of new generations who are accustomed from their earliest years to visit holiday destinations abroad," explains Aurinkomatkat's Chairman of the Board Mauri Annala.

Aurinkomatkat's new Managing Director Jukka Salama is also an experienced travel industry professional. His career in the Finnair Group began in 1972. He was, among other things, centrally involved in the arrangements of the turn of year when Finnish tourists were evacuated under Aurinkomatkat's direction from the tsunami-effected areas of Southeast Asia.

"A package tour provides security also in unforeseen situations. Aurinkomatkat has invested in its customers' safety and service quality, which explains the company's success. Our product range is attractive to Finnish holidaymakers. We are also examining the potential of the tourist market in areas close to Finland and we will tap this potential better in future," says the incoming Managing Director Jukka Salama.

Tom Selänniemi Ph.D. will continue in Aurinkomatkat's management team as Salama's right-hand man. Selänniemi is known as an expert in sustainable tourism both in Finland and internationally. In the mid-1990s, he wrote a doctoral thesis on the topic "Journey to an Eternal Summer", which examined Finns' tourist travel to southern destinations.

"We are the most desirable tourism brand. Aurinkomatkat-Suntours is now in better shape than ever. Goal-oriented development work will continue to ensure that in tightening competition we can still achieve our goal - to fulfil the holiday dreams of Finns in a sustainable, profitable way. Our profit-making ability is good and our personnel are committed to their work," says Deputy Managing Director Tom Selänniemi.

Aurinkomatkat-Suntours is Finland's leading package tour operator, with a market share of over 35 per cent. The company takes nearly 350,000 people on holiday every year. Aurinkomatkat has 300 employees and turnover is 230 million euros. Aurinkomatkat's customers fly on Finnair aircraft. Aurinkomatkat is part of the Finnair Group.

Husain Khan Athar
Secretary General
AEA
AEA announces changes in its organisation

After 10 years at the helm of the pan-European airline association which brings together Europe’s 34 leading network airlines, Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus has ended his term.
As of 1 June, Athar Husain Khan has assumed the function as acting Secretary General until a new Secretary General is presented for election by the CEOs of the Association.

“Mr Schulte-Strathaus has done a superb job in giving support to outline requirements for a healthy aviation sector for Europe”, commented Bernard Gustin, AEA Chairman and CEO of Brussels Airlines. “This was change management at its best.
Now, we face a new challenge: to attract attention from politicians to the fact that aviation plays a vital role in Europe’s economy creating employment and promoting growth of European industries.”

Athar Husain Khan joined the association as airline expert in 2007, and was appointed Deputy Secretary General in 2011. He will explore ways of further improving co-operation with other airline associations, increasing the clout of the aviation sector’s dealings with European institutions, and prioritising the key issues and messages.

“We are currently in a transition phase” explained Mr Gustin. “Besides Mr Husain Khan paving the way for the future, AEA is welcoming a new head of communications; Geert Sciot is Vice President Communications at Brussels Airlines, and has joined AEA as General Manager Communications. Mr Sciot is an acknowledged expert who fits perfectly well into the organisation given his airline communications background.

In order to oversee and steer the change process in the most efficient way, the CEOs of the Association’s airlines have decided to extend the term of the Chairman from one year to two, which means Bernard Gustin will stay in office until the end of next year.
